Have You Repositioned Yourself for the 21st Century Windfall?

Somehow this morning I woke up with a nagging question on my mind.
How does one reposition himself or herself for the 21st century
windfall?

There is so much opportunity around us and yet at the same time
challenges abound.

Yesterday I made a call to a good friend of mine. It’s been long
since we last chatted. She is a mother, wife, consultant and
entrepreneur. When I called her, she sounded stressed. She was
re-working a report which she hadn’t given quality attention as
it should have been.

You see, a few weeks back, she had “taken on so much” and as a result
she was working on things hurriedly and quality suffered. Not just
that, she hadn’t spent some quality time with her daughter or
husband. She’s almost turning a stranger to her friends.

Her clients may soon doubt her. As for the side business (a cafe and
clothing), I imagine it is also crying for some love. Does this
scenario ring a bell?

What does this story have to do with the 21st century windfalls?
Everything. With every opportunity, there are challenges to overcome.
For now, one of the biggest challenges is time and attention.
Beepers, email, news, black berry… you know where this is going.

The key is to step back and create some time for a career make over.
Yes, if there are makeovers for bodies, there is need for the same
kind if not more attention for your career and future.

What do you need to do to become more focused? What
are the 5 core areas you need to pay attention to that will give you
the biggest return on your time and effort? Really take time off to
think about
that.

It’s so easy to get lost in the day today work or needs. Danger is
that could be a huge cost or expense to your glorious future. As Jim
Collins
put it in his ground breaking book “Good to Great”, good is
the enemy of the great.

How true with today’s sooooooo many good opportunities. My desire
for you is that you get back to the basics and figure out what
greatness means to you and really focus on that.

One of the strategies I have found very useful is to take a day off
every week and give it to myself. That’s time for reflection,
reading, thinking, praying, meditating and reviewing my life.

That way I am able to remember what’s important in my life and be
able to turn the ship around to the right direction if it wavers.
It’s one of the best days of the week because after that I get back
to work refreshed and re-energized.

You might be saying but “I am too busy to even get time to scratch
my back and now you are telling me to spend a whole day off?” Yes,
that’s what I recommend. In fact, if that’s your current state, then
the more reasons as to why you should create some time off.

If it’s too close to call, then start with half a day. If that’s too
much for you still, how about 3 hours or even an hour focused on
you? Then you can extend the time frame over time as you become more
and more comfortable to the concept.

Read, read, and read. That’s one of the ways in which you will keep
yourself at the competitive edge of the future.

Learn more about IT and figure out how you can accomplish more
things with less effort.

Network with people beyond your region to tap into global wisdom and
familiarize yourself with what’s happening else where. It’s time
to become a global citizen. I remember it’s Tiger Woods who was
trained by the mum to call himself a member of the human race.

Start calling yourself a global citizen because technology is close
to crushing all geographical barriers.

Keep your mind open to new ideas. Be as malleable as clay. Ready to
soak in as much as possible like an excited sponge.

When you do implement the above ideas plus any you might think of
which I would be happy to hear and learn about, then, the 21st
century is yours for the taking. It’s yours to master rather than
being a slave to it.

And you will harvest a windfall that your friends will be proud of.
Good luck and let me know what you think as you live a comment below.
